Direct from the two-year run of her critically acclaimed solo-show Dairy-Free Love
(Hamilton Fringe, 2012), actress Victoria Murdoch, directed by Susan Wilby, brings her
award-winning dramatic play Bootlegger’s Wife: the woman behind Canada’s most
notorious rumrunner to the Hamilton Fringe. (July 17-27, Theatre Aquarius Studio)
Bootlegger’s Wife is based on the story of Bessie Starkman who joined forces with lover
and business partner Rocco (King of the Bootleggers) Perri to build Canada’s largest
rumrunning operation. Creator and star Victoria Murdoch is delighted to perform this
Hamilton-based historical drama at the Hamilton Fringe Theatre Festival, 2014:
“On August 13
, 2012, a ‘today in history’ radio segment caught my attention. It was the
anniversary of the death of Bessie Starkman, who was described as the business brains of
a bootlegging empire; a woman of great intelligence, passion, strength and courage. The
more I learned about Bessie, the more determined I became to put her story on stage!”
