The Bell Ringer the 2014 Hamilton Fringe Festival @HamOntFringe #hamont
Modern adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame set to haunt audiences at the Hamilton Fringe Festival
Bending Reality Productions is eager to present The Bell Ringer at the Hamilton Fringe Festival. The play is a dark and haunting modern adaptation of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Deviating from recent sugar-coated cinematic adaptations of the classic tale, The Bell Ringer presents a bold narrative that explores society’s condemnation of the physical and emotional desires of people with disabilities. Using seven suspended ropes that transform into elaborate configurations, the play’s minimalist set generates an atmosphere that defies audience expectations. Through compelling dialogue, poignant soundscapes and elegant lighting designs, The Bell Ringer aims to expose its audience to the rarely addressed topics of male body image and the sexual needs of individuals with disabilities.
Bending Reality Productions was recently co-founded by four graduates from McMaster University’s Theatre and Film Studies program. The company is dedicated to creating theatrical and filmic productions in collaboration with other young artists. After constructing The Bell Ringer for McMaster’s Honours Performance Series (where it won five Drammie awards including Best Original Script and Best Set Design), Bending Reality Productions is excited to share their story with new audiences.
The Bell Ringer is presented at The Players’ Guild of Hamilton, Inc. from July 17-27.
