HAMILTON: The first Hamilton Independent Media Awards will occur in October 2014. We invite you to This Ain’t Hollywood for a great night of music, while we raise awareness of the cause – and funds for the winners. 100% of the proceeds will go into a fund that will be distributed amongst the winners – in other words, it’s going right into the hands of those who work tirelessly, often thanklessly, to bring you “the other side of the news.”
That was the catchphrase for The Other Side, hosted by Maggie Hughes. The death of blogger, journalist and radio host Maggie Hughes came as a shock, and her loss was felt across the city. It was her death that caused many to consider the importance of recognizing independent media. The HIMAs were inspired by Maggie’s tireless efforts – and the awards have been nicknamed “The Maggies” in her honour. Celebrating and honouring independent Hamilton journalists working in print, radio, video and online, the HIMAs will award and reward the efforts of those who work so hard to uncover what Maggie would have called “The other side of the news.”
Nominations are now open for the inaugural Hamilton Independent Media Awards, aka “The Maggies. More information can be found at www.himas.ca.
