FRIDAY Richard Laviolette Album Release w. Simone Schmidt
RICHARD LAVIOLETTE (Album Release/FULL BAND PERFORMANCE))
“Taking the Long Way Home”
Singer-songwriter Richard Laviolette is releasing his fourth full-length album. A record to warm the heart as well as the dance floor, Taking the Long Way Home draws on all the grace and grit of the country music his childhood was steeped in. Laviolette’s well-honed chops and deft, masterful lyricism create a container in which to explore resiliency in the face of change, illness and death. Weaving together humour and despair, these songs are, as he sings, “full of grief and praise; stories we all know.”
Produced with Andy Magoffin (who recorded Richard Laviolette and The Oil Spills’ All of Your Raw Materials in 2009), Taking The Long Way Home owes its warmth, rhythm, and country flair to a rough and ready ensemble of musicians, including Lisa Bozikovic on piano, Matthew Reeves on lead guitar, Jessy Bell Smith (Skydiggers) on vocal harmonies, Julia Narveson (Ever Lovin’ Jug Band, Lake of Stew) on fiddle and double bass, Aaron Goldstein (Cowboy Junkies, Bry Webb, Elliott Brood) on pedal steel, Heather Kirby (Ohbijou, Vag Halen) on electric bass, and Aaron Curtis (Two-minute Miracles) on drums.
SIMONE SCHMIDT (Fiver/SOLO)
Fiver is the solo project of Toronto-born and raised singer and songwriter Simone Schmidt, known for fronting The Highest Order
(a band that just released “Still Holding”) and the acclaimed country outfit One Hundred Dollars. No matter which name she is performing under, two strengths of Schmidt’s that immediately arrest you are that voice – awesome and haunting, strong as oak but sanded with sublime vulnerability – and the palpable Dust Bowl-thick instrumental air that fleshes out the mood of every song. Each is so commanding that it’s a testament to her gifts for bleak, poetic firepower and sure-handed nuance that neither crumbles under the magnitude of the other. Fiver just announced the release of a new record on April 21 called “Audible Songs from Rockwood”. Schmidt spent the past three years digging about in the archives of the Rockwood Asylum for the Criminally Insane to gather the needed material for this record.
