WEDNESDAY JEFF MARTIN from the TEA PARTY
Jeff Martin, the musician, has been labeled everything from “child prodigy”, “virtuoso guitarist”, “singer with perfect pitch” to “the devil’s child”, and “an occult reincarnation”. Jeff Martin, the producer, is celebrating 20 years since becoming the youngest ever producer of an EMI record (Splendor Solis) back in 1992. Twenty years and almost 4 million record sales later, Jeff Martin’s unique life path, musical etymology and output have placed him in a high caliber as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer while garnering acclaim from music industry stalwarts.
Jeff Martin’s odyssey into exploring the history and plethora of sounds dates right back to his childhood, when he travelled from his hometown Windsor, Ontario with his father (a Bass player) to visit the blues haunts of Detroit, Michigan (USA). Martin understood and respected the blues and was proficient in improvisation by the age of 11. Upon first listening to the Beatles album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ – and particularly the George Harrison track ‘Within You Without You’ – a distinct blend of Indian Classical music featuring the Harmonium instrument; Martin recalls feeling as though he ‘knew’ this music – as though he had played it, or experienced it in a past life.
Jeff formed the Tea Party with his lifelong friends, Stuart Chatwood and Jeff Burrows in 1990 after many years of playing in bands together throughout their childhood. With a career spanning over 15 years and 8 major-label releases, The Tea Party have successfully gained the attention of fans on a worldwide level, as well as touring a countless number of times throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia. Much of the band’s success can be attributed to their phenomenal stage presence and impeccable artistry and musicianship with a wide variety of instruments and sound textures; the trio’s sound draws heavily on the rock and blues of the 1970s, as well as displaying some psychedelic influences with elements of Middle Eastern, Celtic and Mediterranean music. As a result, The Tea Party are often compared to Led Zeppelin and Martin’s appearance, voice and singing style has drawn comparisons to that of Jim Morrison.
Jeff has carved out a distinctive and successful career for himself as a solo artist, various other side projects, and as an acclaimed and highly sought after producer. He has a hunger for knowledge of art, history, the esoteric, music and melody, that has led him to live and experience exotic places such as Egypt, Turkey, Prague, Italy, Ireland and now Australia where he calls home. Either with the Tea Party or as a solo artist Jeff has enjoyed huge success touring Canada and Australia extensively and the breadth of Europe & The Middle East including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Turkey and Lebanon. His legions of fans from all around the world have proved to be long lasting, dedicated and very vocal on social media to have him perform in their countries. A Jeff Martin show is one that moves the audience to realms like no other. Many have likened a Jeff Martin acoustic show as ‘a religious experience’ that stays with them forever.”

‘Piper & Carson’ will be available at shows, via Hayes’ website, Bandcamp and iTunes. The official album release date is December 8, 2017. The album was recorded live off the floor at Thorpe’s Organic Produce farm in Millgrove, ON (near Hamilton) in the summer of 2017. It was captured in the living room of the century-old Ritcey-Thorpe family farmhouse, with Toronto multi-instrumentalist Chris Bartos as producer (Kaia Kater, The Barr Brothers, Jonathan Byrd). It features Piper Hayes (lead vocal, rhythm guitar), Carson Ritcey-Thorpe (vocal, lead guitar), Kevin Neal (pedal steel), Leah Ritcey-Thorpe (back-up vocals) and Chris Bartos (upright bass, piano, electric and acoustic violin, electric guitar, Moog, vocals).
Nowadays, Hayes performs and writes closely with her partner Carson Ritcey-Thorpe and, after a 2017 western Canada tour, many showcases at Folk Music Ontario, Folk Alliance International and South East Regional Folk Alliance (SERFA), they have become beloved darlings of Canada’s folk music scene.
The album reflects the couple’s last few years together, and it is an album that they encourage people to listen to start to finish. It comes complete with lyrics and a detailed booklet insert, which includes stunning images taken at the farm by renowned Toronto photographer Lisa MacIntosh. “Carson’s sister Leah did a drawing of us as two lil’ manatee merpeople. I liked the drawing so much, we used the caricatures for the album cover. I love when albums are a complete experience and include lyrics and messages by the artists. I want ‘Piper & Carson’ to grab people with not only the music, but also with the total artistic package,” says Hayes.
Fashioned like a flowing tide, these tracks weave a seamless story of life and death, compassion, kindness, standing up for what one believes, action and honouring ancestors. ‘Piper & Carson’ is dedicated in loving memory to Piper’s mother Maggie Thompson Hayes, who passed away suddenly almost one year ago on November 25, 2016.
ARTIST STATEMENT: Hayes states, “I am more excited than ever to release this piece of work to the world. I feel incredibly proud of what we’ve made and overjoyed to be sharing it. Three years ago, I met Carson Ritcey-Thorpe and we began performing, dating and eventually writing together. We love making music together and this album reflects the life we’ve built. ‘Piper & Carson’ is a collection of intentioned songs; songs to heal and remember. I titled the album ‘Piper & Carson’ because that’s just what it is. It’s me and ‘Big Red,’ and it’s how we live, it’s how we love.”
Born in New York City, raised in Toronto and now residing in Hamilton since 2015, Hayes got her start in legendary venues including The Horseshoe Tavern, The Rivoli and The Cameron House (playing with artists including Angela Saini, Julian Taylor and Kevin Hearn). She has toured all over Canada and the USA, headlined three international tours (visiting Nepal, India, Holland, Scotland, Ireland, England, Iceland, Denmark, Italy, France, Spain and Greece) and VIA Rail’s national ‘Artists on board’ program, and played many folk conferences. Previously, she has released her Danny Garcia produced ‘Live in NYC’ in 2013, her Mike Schlosser produced debut EP ‘Ain’t Nothin’ Like…’ in 2014 and her acclaimed EP ‘Goodbye Mister Nice Guy’ in 2016.
Piper also teams up with the Canadian Mental Health Association (going into schools, conferences and outreach programs to dispel stigma around mental illness), she established a music therapy-based class for Hamilton Adult Community Support Program and gives workshops on mental health and songwriting.
“When she’s not touring the world performing songs off her latest EP, she’s spreading awareness for the Canadian Mental Health Association.” – CTV’s Etalk (November 2016).
“Heartache can spawn incredible art…” – Jamie Gutfreund, CP24 Breakfast (October 2016).
“Young, talented!” – Christine Bentley, What She Said Radio, Jewel 88.5 (October 2016) https://youtu.be/
“While it’s catchy pop music, there are definite deeper connotations to the music Piper Hayes is fashioning.” – Ric Taylor, Hamilton Music Notes, View & CFMU FM (October 2016).
“The harmonies in tandem with Carson Ritcey-Thorpe were spot on and Hayes went in search of the vulnerability and the hope in the songs, burnishing them to a shine via her forceful vocals and from the gut lyrics.” – Lenny Stoute, BTW Column, Cashbox Canada (October 2016).
