Strangewaves is thrilled to bring a behemoth tripleheaded monster to This Ain’t Hollywood on an unsuspecting Monday. Time to figure out how to get off work on May 8…

Palberta (NYC/Philly)
Palberta are total mindblowing vagabonds, who are killing it at every level right now. They somehow continue to get better: releasing classic albums on an annual basis and constantly touring have made Palberta living legends in the underground scene. Palberta is totally chaotic, yet masterfully tight. Hamilton debut!

Man Made Hill (Hamilton)
Purveyor of ear-worm melodies, big bouncy beats, syrupy synths and the best live show in canaduh, Man Made Hill is a pop star from a virtual VHScollection. MMH somehow creates something unique and real with each live set, putting it all on the line for the sake of an unforgettable show. Hot on the heels of his brand new smash hit, FINGERTIP, catch him before he hits the road for his first west coast tour!

Sourpussy (Hamilton)
The mischievous rascals of improv are back to tear a big ol hole in whatever expectations we might have. After a cold harsh winter, Sourpussy is sure ready to *SPRING* into action and deliver a freakishly radical set of spontaneity.

TUESDAY  MAY 8 Calcedon/CHANCES/The Ferns in Hamilton

There’s something empowering about seeing Montreal’s CHANCES play live. Lead singers Chloé Lacasse and Geneviève Toupin mirror each other with their synth/keyboard set-ups while drummer Vincent Carré sits directly in the middle, forming a circle with the audience and giving the show a sort of pop ceremony feel. Their unique sound is a blend of influences and cultures, mixing indie-pop with a hint of electro and world music, underscored by the english, french-canadian and Metis backgrounds present in the trio. With harmonies weaving in and out of thumping drums and sparkling synths, CHANCES’ otherworldly pop songs strike like a stream of light to the gut.

Slow — Vancouver
https://slow.bandcamp.com/releases

It is almost impossible to over-estimate the effect of Slow on Canadian music. Formed in the mid-80s in Vancouver, and releasing only one album and one 7″ on Zulu Records, the band has consistently been called one of the most influential punk rock bands in Canada and forerunners of the Seattle grunge scene. Perhaps most infamously, Slow is also the band that brought Expo 86 to its knees.

Not bad for a band that recorded only eight songs.
Slow was formed by Thomas Anselmi, Christian Thorvaldson, Stephen Hamm, and Terry Russell. Ziggy Sigmund was added to the line-up soon after as a second guitarist. The band released the 7″ I Broke the Circle in 1985, followed by Against the Glass in 1986, which featured the legendary “Have Not Been the Same,” one of the most iconic songs in Canadian music history. The song’s name was even taken as the name for the CanRock Encyclopedia, published by ECW Press.

Slow’s brand of rock n roll and punk rock has not aged one bit: Anselmi’s voice is monstrous, the guitars seriously rock n roll, and the drummer is all energy and destruction. Against the Glass is the kind of album that could only be delivered by a veteran act of 20 years—or a bunch of genius teenagers with not much better to do.
