SATURDAY JUNE 22 – MOTHER TAREKA & RUBEN ESGUERRA + NEW TRADITION- 9pm
Lula Music & Arts Centre
These 2 MCs are bringing the power to the stage! Wind instruments and rhyming is something you can’t miss!
Hip-hop infused with traditional music and danceable rhythms.
Sax blasting, flute tooting, loop-pedal pumping MC Mother Tareka is a Syrian Palestinian artist, and an adopted Hamilton son. Tarek makes powerful Jazz Arabesque Afrobeat Funk HipHop music, and is musically known for his energetic live band arrangements, and intense political messages.
RUEBEN ESGUERRA AND NEW TRADITION
Beny Esguerra and New Tradition incorporate a seamless array of elements: bilingual socially-conscious spoken word, beat-boxing, Afro-Cuban and Colombian secular and religious drumming, Indigenous flutes, West African balafon, funk, zouk, merengue and flourishes of 70’s Nuyorican salsa!
For musician, poet, educator, activist and JUNO Awards Nominee Ruben ‘Beny’ Esguerra, the arts are a vehicle of transformation. “The difference in the world begins with yourself,” Esguerra says. “If you can find your purpose through art, if you can empower yourself, you will soon empower others as well.”

SUNDAY JUNE 23 ORANGEMILK SHOWCASE: CVN • KOEOSAEME • MAN MADE HILL
Man Made Hill
Japan’s Nobuyuki Sakuma is a prolific artist; formerly of the Jesse Ruins duo on the Captured Tracks label, he now shifts time between his electronic music project CVN, curating the mix series Grey Matter Archives, and chief editor duties at Avyss Magazine. “I.C.” will be his second album for Orange Milk as CVN, and it is an eclectic hybrid of beat music and abstract electronics. There is a searching quality in his music, with leaps in variation from track to track that are meant to elicit the mutating feelings of walking through Tokyo.
Koeosaeme is Japanese artist Ryu Yoshizawa, and OBANIKESHI, his second album for Orange Milk, is a master class in how to engineer a compelling sound-design record front to back. Utilizing a variety of recorded instruments and hi-fidelity electronics, OBANIKESHI can be linked to multiple musical lineages; the screeching strings, whispered vocals, and moments of atonality recall famous works of 20th century composers like György Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki, while sections of manic synthetic noise bring to mind tape-collage composer Noah Creshevsky and more recent Japanese underground artists Foodman, toiret status, Seiho, and others.
Man Made Hill (Hamilton)
Canada’s Prince of Creativity, Man Made Hill, returns to the This Ain’t Hollywood stage to once again leave it all on the line for the audience. Hot on the heels of another masterpiece release, “Relaxed Fit”, you know MMH will have plenty of fresh tricks and treasures up his kaleidoscopic sleeve.
