Families Welcome!
Saturday April 28th, 2 to 4 pm.

A TRUE CANADIAN BORN AND RAISED IN HAMILTON.

Nick was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. While attending St.Jean de Brebeuf high school, he asserted his athletic abilities playing soccer and football. Nick completed his post secondary education at Bishops University in Sherbrook Quebec – completing four successful football seasons with the Gaiters and graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Major in Entrepreneurship.

Nick started his bobsleigh career in January 2013. He wasted no time in learning to drive a bobsleigh as he took the front seat on the track in LakePlacid, New York. Following this training, Nick had an impressive start to the 2013-2014 season, placing 3rd at the Canadian Championships. Nick’s success on the 2013-2014 North American Cup circuit continued – with starts consistently in the top 5 amongst stiff competition alongside some of the foremost World Cup sleds.

Nick started the 2014-2015 season on the Winsport Academy Team – an accelerated pilot program for the National Bobsleigh Team – clinching two 1st place finishes on the North American Cup. Nick’s success quickly escalated in the second half of the season, as he moved to the National Team to compete on the World Cup Circuit. His 15th place finish at the World Championships was the highest finish for a Canadian Men’s Team.

Nick’s current world ranking is 18th out of 90 sleds.

Toronto troubadour Chris A. Cummings (Marker Starling, formerly Mantler) has been playing Melancholy Party Jams since 1999. A solo performer for many years, his preferred weapons were a Wurltizer electric piano and an early pre-programmed drum machine. More recently he has been supported by a band consisting of Jay Anderson (drums) and Matt McLaren (bass).

After a long association with Germany’s Tomlab label, who released the second, third and fourth Mantler records (SADISFACTION, LANDAU and MONODY) Cummings began working with UK-based Tin Angel Records in 2010. With Tin Angel, Marker Starling has released 3 albums since 2015 – the acclaimed ROSY MAZE (praised by Matthew Horton in the NME for its “timeless quality”), solo all-covers record I’M WILLING (2016), and the self-retrospective ANCHORS AND AMPERSANDS (2017). An all-originals solo record is planned for release in late 2018. The recent 3 records were also released by Japan’s 7e.p. Records, who brought Cummings to Japan for performances in 2016 and 2018.

Cummings has collaborated with the German band Von Spar, contributing vocals and lyrics to four songs on their album STREET LIFE (Italic, 2014). His song “Deep Background” was recorded by Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier for her Source Ensemble record FIND ME FINDING YOU (Drag City, 2017). His 2010 song “In Stride” was included in DJ Koze’s DJ-Kicks compilation on !K7 Records in 2015.

For this “expanded band” performance, the core band of Cummings, Anderson, McLaren and Andy Scott (guitar/synth/percussion) will be joined by three backing singers (Alex Samaras, Robin Dann and Ben Gunning) and three horn players (Jeremy Strachan (saxophones, flute), Jason Hay (saxophones) and Patric McGroarty (trumpet)).

WEDNESDAY  Woodhawk “Magnetic North” Tour 2018 With Familiars

Image may contain: text

Calgary, AB’s masters of straight ahead riff-rock wizardry WOODHAWK announce their 2018 Canadian “Magnetic North Tour” in support of their latest full length album “Beyond The Sun” released April last year and recently named the #12 most played release on the Canadian College Radio Top 20 Loud Charts for 2017 (Source: Earshot). The tour will see the trio trek across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba plus performing for the first time in Ontario and Quebec (dates listed below).
The band comments:
“We’re excited to be hitting the road again and heading out East this time. We haven’t played past Winnipeg yet and we’re stoked to finally make it out there.”WOODHAWK’s debut album “Beyond The Sun” was produced by the band with Jesse Gander (Bison, Japandroids) to follow their 2014 self-titled EP. Made of equal parts 1970’s Birmingham and a myriad of 21st century heavy who’s who, WOODHAWK are purveyors of riff-centric rock and roll. Capable and original, the band is able to craft anthemic fist-pumping songs while forgoing tired stoner rock clichés. With time travel tested themes of science fiction, swords and sorcery, the band’s lyrics are born from snowy winters, hot practice spaces and pages of dog-eared paperbacks. While the musicianship reinforces recollections of Black Sabbath, modern influences that have helped you smash air drums or highway speed limits are undeniably present.
‘Beyond The Sun’ album stream available on Bandcamp at https://woodhawk.bandcamp.com/

The album is available on digital, vinyl and CD.

BEAUTIFUL NOTHING (Burlington, ON)
THE FOREIGN RESORT (Copenhagen, Denmark)
SINE RITUAL (Hamilton, ON)

Beautiful Nothing
An eighties ignited sphere of driving electronics, thick, grimace inducing bass lines and soaring, dissonant guitar lines that would speak to the Pixies in their Bossanova years.

The Foreign Resort
The Foreign Resort are Denmark’s finest musical export of post-punk and dark new wave. The trio combines the shadowy mysticism of The Cure’s Pornography era with a driving production aesthetic akin to LCD Soundsystem.

One 1/2 of the brains behind Orange Milk Records, a Dayton Ohio based label currently releasing some of the most progressive electronic music on the planet.
Seth is hot on the heels of his brand new LP “Gasp” an ambitious, mercurial opus loaded with unexpected textures and lightning quick edits, like “a digital blob of classical music with no obligation, testing the limits of both classical structure, modern technology, and unconscious obligation to the listener”. First show in Hamilton!

Giant Claw (Dayton,OH)

The Other 1/2 of Orange Milk, Giant Claw is the sound collage project of musician and visual artist Keith Rankin.
Deftly handling an array of complex, and staggeringly fresh sounds, Giant Claw smothers you in a hyperreal electronic sauce that cannot be experienced anywhere else.
A Playful, kaleidoscopic throwback to early MIDI music, Giant Claw “makes music that sounds like the soundtrack to a dystopian children’s book published in 1981”. First show in Hamilton!

Nadah El Shazly (Cairo, Egypt)

Starting out singing Misfits covers in a local punk band, then moving onto producing her own electronic tracks and making a name for herself in Cairo’s underground scene, Nadah El Shazly’s backstory is not that unusual. Her debut album on the other hand, is an entirely unexpected story.

Two years in the making, Ahwar (Arabic for marshlands) is an otherworldly record, not unlike an abstract mythological story-tale. Opening with the mangled and filtered vocals of the album’s lead track Afqid Adh-Dhakira (I Lose Memory) like an alien dream, the drones of a bowed double bass lead us into a drum groove that lays the groundwork for El Shazly’s sultry and captivating presence, singing: “(I am) coming, from a time far away. Going, escaping. Alone in the wilderness”.

The Arabic prose lingers over interjections of slap-back delayed guitar twangs and an avant-garde arrangement of dissonant winds, horns and seemingly random drum fills, ending with an eerie soundscape that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Giallo classic. A daring and potent statement that sets the foundations over which the rest of the album can unravel.

Composed, written and produced by El Shazly herself in collaboration with The Dwarfs of East Agouza’s Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi on co-composition and arrangement duties, the album was crafted across two continents, between Canada and Egypt, and features the crème of Montreal’s contemporary-classical and improvised music scene, most of whom are members of Shalabi’s own Land of Kush ensemble.

In between El Shazly’s five original tracks, we are treated to an abstract cover version of Sayyid Darwish’s classic Ana ‘Ishiqt (I Once Loved). El Shazly’s haunting vocal floats over broken Kalimba and Harp arpeggios which slowly intertwine with a free, bowed double bass improv to nestle within the breaks between Younes Al-Qadhi’s early 20th century verses of love and betrayal.

More than that, it is difficult to really describe, but imagine the worlds of Nico, Björk and Annette Peacock with the Arabic language as their mother tongue, re-approached through acoustic avant-jazz harmony and re-constructed with a dash of Kamilya Jubran’s modern styling of Arabic maqam and you may be somewhere close.

Devin Brahja Waldman & Friends (NYC/Montreal/Hamilton)

Leader and New York saxophonist, Devin Brahja Waldman, has performed and/or recorded with Patti Smith, Thurston Moore, Malcolm Mooney (of Can), Lydia Lunch, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Baba Donn Babatunde (of The Last Poets), Daniel Carter, Nadah El Shazly, Yoshiko Chuma and Sam Shalabi. He is a member of Heroes Are Gang Leaders— led by poet Thomas Sayers Ellis and saxophonist James Brandon Lewis. Waldman plays in Artists For A Free World Marching Band led by Patricia Parker and William Parker. He has collaborated with his aunt, outrider poet Anne Waldman, since the age of ten. As a youngster, Waldman received formative mentorship by pianist Paul Bley. Waldman is a co-producer for Fast Speaking Music— a NYC poetry and music label which has released the works of Amiri Baraka, Meredith Monk, Eileen Myles, CA Conrad, Fred Moten, Joanne Kyger and many others.

Along with Nadah, Devin is fortuitously in the area to be part of the Land of Kush: Sand Enigma – World Premiere ensemble, and is using this opportunity to unleash a brand new release of his, coming out onHAVNrecords!
