THE ADHD PROJECT

After successful workshops at the St. Catharines In The Soil Arts Festival and Hamilton Mental Health MindPLAY Festival,Carlyn Rhamey brings her award-winning show, The ADHD Project to the Hamilton Fringe Festival from July 20th – 30th .

Written by Rhamey and directed by Fringe veteran Jon Paterson (Dora Award winning BoyGroove), The ADHD Project is a biographical account of growing up with ADHD and learning to embrace and celebrate what makes us different. “I’m sharing my story in hopes that it will raise awareness about neurodiversity”, explains Rhamey, “and hopefully show how hilariously eventful life can be when you experience it a little differently.”

In Ottawa, audience members lined up at the end of every show to thank Rhamey and talk to her about their own experiences with ADHD and neurodiversity.

Rhamey closed the festival winning the Ottawa University Emerging Artist Award.

The Hamilton Fringe Festival is the third stop in a five-city Fringe Festival tour in 2017, having enjoyed successful stops in Ottawa and Regina, where Rhamey is also performing her Hamilton Fringe Best-of-Venue hit SAOR.

The ADHD Project opens July 20th and runs until July 29th. Tickets are available at HamiltonFringe.ca or at the door.

SCUM: A MANIFESTO July 21-30 @Hamiltontheatre @hamontfringe #hamont @scantilygladsk #scummanifesto

Image may contain: 1 person, sunglasses

ABOUT the PLAY
Scantily Glad Theatre is proud to bring its latest show, SCUM:
A MANIFESTO, a provocative new satire, to the Hamilton
Fringe Festival from July 20-July 30 at Hamilton Theatre Inc.
In 1967, Valerie Solanas wrote the radically feminist “S.C.U.M.
Manifesto: Society for Cutting Up Men,” which suggested that
in order for women to be truly liberated, they must overthrow
the government and kill all men. SCUM: A MANIFESTO is a
look inside the mind of the woman who shot Andy Warhol
and an examination of the feminist movement today. Watch us
cross the line of traditional theatre, over and over…
Since its premiere at the PotashCorp Saskatoon Fringe Theatre
Festival in 2016, the play has undergone a developmental
workshop by Canadian playwright, Vern Thiesen (Einstein’s
Gift, Vimy) and was featured in the Saskatchewan Playwrights
Centre’s Spring Festival of New Plays. The show recently
toured to the St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival to a warm
and welcoming audience and critical success.

ABOUT the COMPANY
We are Scantily Glad Theatre: an emerging independent
theatre company from Saskatoon. Founded in 2014, our
mandate is to create original, thought-provoking theatre that
promotes the work of female artists. This summer, we are
taking our newest show, SCUM: A MANIFESTO, on a tour of
the Canadian Fringe circuit. Created by an all-female ensemble,
we are proud to be bringing this show to the Hamilton
Fringe Festival as the second stop on our tour.
Director, Danielle Spilchen, has toured the Canadian Fringe
Circuit with award-winning Fringe comedies:
Aiden Flynn Lost His Brother So He Makes Another,
Dr. Frightful Presents: Dead Air and Southern Dandy 75!
Creator/performers, S.E. Grummett & Caitlin Zacharias have
been working together for over 5 years, creating raunchy, bold
new work.

“Shining a light on the still-fraught relationships
between the sexes is always a relevant pastime, and
this tightly produced dark comedy will make individuals
of every gender laugh as much as it makes them
squirm.” (Cult Montreal)
“Often provocative, often shocking, this provocative
play is an experience one will not soon forget.”
(Saskatoon Fringe Audience Review)
“The ladies are captivating and enigmatic, pulling
the audience in from the start and commanding
the room, often by engaging directly with audience
members…it is impossible to drift off or let your mind
wander while Grummett and Zacharias are doing
their thing. SCUM is an important show, and a must
see at this years’ festival.” (Montreal Theatre Hub)
“Full of sound and fury, signifying something… an
extreme reaction against a patriarchal society.”
(Westmount Magazine)

Rodney DeCroo
After returning from a five-year sabbatical from music in 2015 with the intimate collection Campfires On The Moon, Vancouver singer/songwriter, poet and playwright Rodney DeCroo’s musical evolution continues with his seventh full-length album, Old Tenement Man, a sprawling work of unflinching lyric-driven rock and roll, infused with the legacies of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen.

“His powerful new album Old Tenement Man [ …] is a record of record of noisy peaks (the distortion -blazed “Jacob’s Well”) and delicate valleys (the lovely acoustic exorcism “Little Hunger”). The album is important because it showcases DeCroo as someone who- like Neil Young and Lou Reed – is capable of reinventing himself sonically.”
– Georgia Straight

“The album to make all sorts who didn’t “get it” before figure it out. He sounds like he’s having a blast and it’s infectious.”
– Vancouver Sun

“[DeCroo] turns up the volume on Old Tenement Man, with bracing results.”
– FYI Music News

“Tenement is, to borrow a phrase, a brilliant record. It’s a grit-caked, guts-stained guttural work that’s so immediate, alive and honest you’ll hear its heartbeat before you press play, but so timeless that you’d swear you could sing every line on first listen. It’s astonishing, really, just how classic of a contemporary rock record it is.”

THE ELEPHANT GIRLS @TheStaircase July 20-30, 2017 #HamOnt

True story of the all-female gang that once terrorized London, England.

“Without doubt, they were the most notorious girl gang Britain’s ever seen.”
—Brian McDonald, The Gangs of London

Clever, organized, devious and daring; The Elephant Girls stole from the rich and gave to themselves. This is the gripping story of the all-female gang that terrorized London for over 100 years. A fascinating piece of lost women’s history, only recently brought to light, the play focuses on the 1920s when the gang was at the height of its power—and when the events took place which would come to mean its downfall.

“Right here, right now, for one night only, I’ll tell you something special I ain’t never told no one before; I’ll tell you the truth.”
—Maggie Hale, The Elephant Girls

Maggie Hale — the gang’s suit-wearing, bloody-knuckled, girl-chasing “enforcer”— will tell you all. Who they were, what they did, how they got away with it, and how it all came crashing down. But should you trust the words of someone who’s made deception her stock-in-trade? Just how much are you sure you want to hear?

Wrapping issues of power, class, gender, and the nature of violence around the story of Maggie Hale, the show uses history to grapple with issues our society still struggles with today.

A gripping, psychological insight into gang life…The Elephant Girls evolves into a deeply psychological struggle between truth and fiction, as Maggie wrestles with the dangerous passion that bubbles beneath her carefully constructed bravado. Complex, subtle, and often deeply uncomfortable, this battle is fascinating to watch.
—Jordan Shaw, The List

Written and performed by Margo MacDonald, the production has won multiple awards in Canada (Outstanding Overall, Critics’ Pick for Best Show, Ottawa Fringe Festival; Outstanding New Work, Outstanding Direction, and Outstanding Performance, Les Prix Rideau Awards; Best Actress, Capital Critics’ Circle), sold out shows (100% Sold Out, Ottawa Fringe; 100% Sold Out, Winnipeg Fringe), and rave reviews. Picked up from last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the show arrives in Hamilton after playing at Draper Hall in London, England (April 6-22), the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in Ireland (May 8-13), and the Brighton Fringe Festival in England (May 20-26).

THURSDAY  THE MEDICINE HAT /LOST COUSINS / THE KENTS – 8pm

Image may contain: one or more people and text

The Medicine Hat / Hamilton

The Medicine Hat is an experimental-pop band from Hamilton, Ontario.
Frontwoman Nabi Sue Bersche’s nimble, raw lyricism is illuminated by a voice like holy fire: blistering and purifying. Focussed guitar work dances with the hypnotic timbres and soaring melodies of analog synthesizers. Deft lines and dangerous grooves are intoned by a disciplined drum & bass combo. Chaos lurks beneath the surface of The Medicine Hat’s tight motifs and rhythmic trances, erupting into moments of prophetic ecstasy. Their live performances are wild affairs. Brimstone at their heels, The Medicine Hat’s contagious energy turns rooms into reveries.

Lost Cousins / Toronto

Family isn’t always bound by blood. In the case of Lost Cousins it is bound through the kindred connection found in their unique blend of psychedelic soul rock. Coming together as students in Kingston, ON, Dylan Cantlon Hay, Cam Duffin, Lloyd McArton and Thomas Dashney had humble beginnings at house concerts and basement performances, where they became known for their intensely energetic live shows and memorable songwriting.

The Kents / Lindsay

The Kents are an emerging force from Lindsay, Ontario that call on anthemic intimacy.
Formed in 2014, The Kents is comprised of Warren Frank (vocals), Freddy Kwon (guitar), Luke Shauf (bass) and Tanner Paré (drums).
Waking EP, produced by Derek Hoffman (The Elwins, DCF) at Fox Sounds in Toronto with mastering from Dan Weston (Shad, City And Colour), encapsulates lyrical explorations of family, loss and separation from the comfort of adolescence with a hook-hungry, pop filter that controls the chaos.

His songs are a testament to the years of devotion to the craft yet their message remains relative to all of his listeners. His soulful melodies and thoughtful chord progressions will have you wanting to listen to his songs on repeat.

DEEPS

Steve “Deeps” De Piante is a multi instrumentalist and alt-country/soul songwriter and performer from Hamilton, Ontario. With heartfelt lyrics and music that you will be sure to at least tap your toes to, Deeps’ always enthusiastic performances are not to be missed! SUNDAY  This Way North, Kirby and Holy Smokes – 8PM

This Way North will be playing their first show in Hamilton with their good friends local lad Kirby and local band Holy Smokes.
Tickets $8 on the door.

Hailing from Melbourne, guitar/drums two-piece This Way North are Leisha Jungalwalla (Jungal) and Cat Leahy (Sal Kimber & the Rollin’ Wheel). They first met in the north…Canada in fact; at the renowned British Columbian ArtsWells Festival. While hanging at the festival, they discovered that their permanent homes were both north-side… Melbourne that is…half a world away but only 500m apart. A few post-tour blues jams lead to something good…really good.
This Way North began as a means of finding a way back… to find direction again, and it damn well worked.

Punchy, left of centre, with a universally appealing groove and melody. Cat brings solid groove based, dynamic power drumming, while Leisha sways with swampy slide guitar, slimmed down soul vocals, live looping and compelling alt-pop melodies. Sometimes likened to The Black Keys, Tame Impala and Ainslie Wills, their unique musical connection creates an explosive sound that’s rarely realised by just two artists on stage.
