Montreal violinist Jessica Moss has performed and recorded with a wide spectrum of ensembles over the last two decades. Best known as a permanent member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, she was also a founding member of avant-klezmer group Black Ox Orkestar, recorded and toured with the Vic Chesnutt band for the two albums released on Constellation, and worked extensively with Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista. She has also performed and recorded as a guest with many of Montreal’s best known artists, most recently with Big|Brave on their acclaimed 2016 record for Southern Lord. She was featured in Jem Cohen’s Empires of Tin project, and joined members of Godspeed, Fugazi, White Magic and Dirty Three to perform the live score to Cohen’s film We Have An Anchor in various locations at Europe and the USA. Most recently she’s been collaborating and performing with the band Laniakea, featuring Daniel O’Sullivan (Ulver, Grumbling Fur, Æthenor, This Is Not This Heat) and Massimo Pupillo (Zu).

Though she’s been playing violin practically her entire life, Jessica has always felt most at home in a collaborative setting and has been steadfastly devoted to the practice of ensemble playing. This has generally meant creation ‘in the service of’: the other parts being played, the lyrics being sung, the structure of the song, and/or the recording and mixing at hand. The practices inherent in group creation and performance inform her very person in many ways and have given her a deep understanding and respect for both group dynamics and ‘working communities’ in general.

Moss’ catalyst to create solo work was a 2014 virtual collaboration with Olympia, USA musician Kevin Doria, who creates intensely rich and layered minimalist drone music under the moniker Total Life and with his bands Growing and Hiss Tracts. Simultaneously she was commissioned by La Biennale de Montréal to create a site specific composition that reflected on the theme of the 2014 exhibition.

Alone in her practice space equipped with the tools, methods, and experiences gleaned from years in studios, rehearsal spaces, performing and touring, Jessica commenced building her unique style and structure. The music that came was longform and narrative, conjuring images with sounds and melodies and occasional lyrics, and telling exigent stories of troubled times. Written by ear and memory and never committed to paper, Moss conceives for live performance, where she makes use of violin, a myriad of pedals, a microphone, and three amplifiers.

Moss says she feels aligned with the transportive nature of storytelling tradition. By creating narrative music around subjects already on many minds, she aims to create a space for collective reflection. She believes sharing such “transporting moments” can be both balm and a catalyst to engagement .

In 2015 Jessica self-released the cassette Under Plastic Island, a beautiful, swirling meditation on the island of plastic trash floating in the ocean, the result of a trip to Brooklyn during which she spent time in the basement recording studio of friend and occasional collaborator Guy Picciotto.

In the last 18 months she has been invited to perform solo at Le Guess Who in Utrecht, ATP in Wales, Pop Montreal, La Biennale de Montréal, and Suoni Per Il Popolo. For the 2017 edition of Big Ears Festival (Knoxville, USA), Moss will perform solo as well as undertake multiple collaborative performances with Cohen’s Gravity Hill project (featuring Guy Picciotto, Jim White, Matana Roberts and others).

May 2017 heralds Jessica Moss’ first official full-length solo release. Comprised of two side-length multi-movement compositions, Pools Of Light is a stunning work that unfolds at a stately, inexorable pace, combining sound-art and signal-processed timbres, extended melodic and contrapuntal lines, and the periodic deployment of stark, minimalist vocals. Recorded with kindred spirit Radwan Ghazi Moumneh and released on the only label home she knows, Jessica says she “is feeling fucking grateful to be doing what I’m doing right now” and hopes to see you on the road.

MARKER STARLING – solo (Toronto)https://markerstarling.bandcamp.com/
Toronto troubadour Chris A. Cummings (Marker Starling, formerly Mantler) has been playing Melancholy Party Jams since 1999. A solo performer for many years, his preferred weapons were a Wurltizer electric piano and an early pre-programmed drum machine. More recently he has been supported by a band consisting of Jay Anderson (drums) and Matt McLaren (bass).
After a long association with Germany’s Tomlab label, who released the second, third and fourth Mantler records (SADISFACTION, LANDAU and MONODY) Cummings began working with UK-based Tin Angel Records in 2010. With Tin Angel, Marker Starling has released 3 albums since 2015 – the acclaimed ROSY MAZE (praised by Matthew Horton in the NME for its “timeless quality”), solo all-covers record I’M WILLING (2016), and the self-retrospective ANCHORS AND AMPERSANDS (2017). An all-originals solo record is planned for release in late 2018. The recent 3 records were also released by Japan’s 7e.p. Records, who brought Cummings to Japan for performances in 2016 and 2018.
Cummings has collaborated with the German band Von Spar, contributing vocals and lyrics to four songs on their album STREET LIFE (Italic, 2014). His song “Deep Background” was recorded by Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier for her Source Ensemble record FIND ME FINDING YOU (Drag City, 2017). His 2010 song “In Stride” was included in DJ Koze’s DJ-Kicks compilation on !K7 Records in 2015.

SARAH GOOD – solo (Hamilton)

Few punk bands have remained in business for as long as the veteran Canadian trio, Dayglo Abortions, has. Since 1979, the band (in one configuration or another) has been offering up no-holds barred punk rock (that was eventually merged with heavy metal), as well as some truly over-the-top (and unforgettable) album cover artwork/images. And the lads are back with their first studio album in twelve years (and ninth studio set overall), ‘Armageddon Survival Guide,’ which will be unleashed on March 25, 2016, via Unrest Records.

Since the beginning, the group has been led by Murray Acton AKA “The Cretin” (guitar and vocals), and made their mark on the punk underground throughout the ’80s, with such over-the-top classics as ‘Out of the Womb’ (1981), ‘Feed Us a Fetus’ (1986), and ‘Here Today, Guano Tomorrow’ (1987). But it was also during this time that the band found themselves in hot water with the law, after obscenity charges were brought against the band and their then-label, Fringe Product, after a police officer’s daughter bought a copy of ‘Here Today,’ and the officer failed to appreciate the band’s irreverent sense of humour. Happily, all charges were dropped in 1990.

Dayglo Abortions continued on their merry way throughout the ’90s with such additional recordings as ‘Two Dogs Fucking – Deux Chiens Fourrent’ (1991), ‘Little Man in the Canoe’ (1995), ‘Corporate Whores’ (1996), ‘Stupid World, Stupid Songs’ (1998), and ‘Death Race 2000’ (1999). And it was around this time that The Cretin was joined by bassist Willy Jak, who has remained a member of the band to this very day. The early 21st century saw the arrival of further albums, including ‘Holy Shiite’ (2004) and ‘Live 2011’ (2011), which led to the arrival of the group’s modern day drummer, Blind Marc (who is indeed legally blind), as well as the aforementioned ‘Armageddon Survival Guide.’

“Just like Armageddon, our new album has been rumoured to be coming out for ages now,” explains The Cretin. “In fact, it says in the Bible, that in the end times, the world will go totally to shit, everyone will be sinning their goddamned asses off, and they will all be listening punk bands like the Dayglo Abortions, who clearly couldn’t give a shit about God or the Devil. Now those aren’t the exact words used of course. But that was a long time ago, and what the fuck did they know anyway. Anyway…those days are here, the world has gone to shit, Lady Gaga is rubbing her Satan worshipping vagina all over the Super Bowl, and the new Dayglo album is out.”

“The ‘Armageddon Survival Guide’ is gonna kick the shit out of you. It’s gonna scare the fucking Jesus out of God and all his sissy angels. We’re not sure how Satan will take it, but we don’t believe in him anyway, so fuck Satan. Let your head get smashed in by the ‘Armageddon Survival Guide,’ brought to you by those Messiahs of the UN-sane, the Dayglo Abortions.

TUESDAY OCT 23 Edgar Breau/ Jean Caffeine’s North American Folk Punk Agreement

Image may contain: 1 person

Jean Caffeine and Edgar Breau both have storied pasts as first wave punks. Although they both still front rock bands they sometimes like to take it down a notch and play folkier songwriter sets. We are playing separate sets. I just thought the North American Folk Punk Agreement thing was funny.

Edgar Breau is a singer/songwriter in the Canadian primitive folk tradition. His latest self titled recording is on the Flying Inn Music label. It drew comparisons to Tim Hardin and a sane Syd Barrett. Edgar credits John Fahey and Lightnin’ Hopkins as influences on his highly idiosyncratic guitar stylings. On occasion Edgar rolls out the big guns and plays with his paradoxical proto punk art rock sextet, Simply Saucer. Edgar is doggedly and feverishly at work on his latest project, a new collection of songs called, A Shadow I Can’t Shake. It s due out early next year. When he’s not playing music Edgar can be found reading his beloved George Bernanos novels and watching films by Andre Tarkovsky. The lovely Colina Phillips hovers in the background. They live in a quirky cottage in Dundas Ontario.

Jean Caffeine lives in Austin, TX where she plays both folkie gigs and band gigs. Jean played drums in a first wave punk band called the Urge and also in Pulsallama, a 7-10 piece all female ensemble who opened five shows for the Clash. Jean is touring in support of her album, “Sadie Saturday Nite” an album of songs and stories about coming of age in the first wave punk scene. The album is a companion to a show that Jean performed with Mike Trebilcock a few years back at the Hamilton Fringe Fest. Mike plays and sings on some tracks on the album. Basic tracks for “The Winter of Hate”, (about the last Sex Pistols show) were recorded and produced by Mike. Jean lived in the Hammer for two years and recorded tracks off her album , “Geckos in the Elevator” in Hamilton at Micheal Bithelmer’s studio. Local drummer LINDSAY BIRD will sit in a few songs at the end of the set!

WEDNESDAY Oct 24th – NESSERIA BAD COUNT and MENIAL RIPS – 8pm

Image may contain: text

NESSERIA
https://nesseria.bandcamp.com

Massive, grinding metallic hardcore band NESSERIA have been one of France’s most consistent powers since their inception in 2003. Their third album, “Cette Erosion De Nous-Mêmes,” marks a departure from their previous body of work. While their trademark steamrolling style is still there, with grindcore and black metal-influenced tracks, the band’s wide scope of influences (screamo, folk, shoegaze) have brilliantly evolved by putting an emphasis on their more emotional, atmospheric side, without ever giving an inch on their abrasive tendencies.
MENIAL RIPS
