Jerusalem In My Heart:
Jerusalem In My Heart (JIMH) returns with Daqa’iq Tudaiq, the third full-length album from the Montréal-Beirut contemporary Arabic audio-visual duo, following the acclaimed 2015 release If He Dies, If If If If If If (year-end lists at The Wire (#39), The Quietus (#24) and A Closer Listen (Top 10), among other accolades).

Featuring voice, electronics, buzuk and other instrumentation from composer-producer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Matana Roberts, Suuns, Big Brave) and complemented by the 16mm analog film work of Charles-André Coderre in live performance, JIMH continues to expand the horizons of its profound conceptual and aesthetic engagement with Arabic/Middle-Eastern traditions. Daqa’iq Tudaiq translates as “minutes that bother/oppress/harass” – which presumably needs no further explanation – and features two distinct album sides of music.

Side One realizes a long-held dream of Moumneh’s to record a modern orchestral version of the popular Egyptian classic “Ya Garat Al Wadi” by the legendary composer Mohammad Abdel Wahab. JIMH assembled a 15-piece orchestra in Beirut, enlisting the celebrated Montréal-Cairo musician/composer Sam Shalabi (Land Of Kush) as arranger and musical director for the session. Anchored by the stately hypnotic pace of plucked and percussive instruments (riq, santur, derbakeh, kanun), the piece unfolds with lush, languid, reverb-drenched manoeuvrings through virtuosic Maqam shifts (Oriental scales). Moumneh’s melismatic lead vocals and electronic production sensibility pay homage to the genre’s documented historical recording traditions, while pushing things subtly and respectfully into new territories of sonic distortion and noised, artefact-laden transmission. The song’s original title (with lyrics penned in 1928 by the poet Ahmad Shawqi) translates as “Oh Neighbour Of The Valley”, but JIMH takes a different line from the original lyric as the new title for its orchestral-electronic re-interpretation. “Wa Ta’atalat Loughat Al Kalam” (“The Language Of Speech Has Broke Down”) is an expression of wordless love and transcendent communication between two lovers’ eyes in Shawqi’s poem; JIMH re-titles the song with this line, exploding the sentiment with more complexity, tragedy and socio-political meaning – also prefiguring the formal aesthetic ruptures JIMH bring to the piece itself. Love in a time of politics, politics in a world conspiring against love, and the specificity of Arab diasporic experience in our brutish 21st century.

Side Two comprises four tracks of non-ensemble “solo” material by Moumneh which push rupture and decomposition/recomposition of tradition further into avant-garde territory – voice, buzuk and electronics take the lead on a suite of emotive and evocative songs, including the percussive loop-driven instrumental “Bein Ithnein” (“Between Two” ) and the stunningly unsettling processed vocal track “Thahab, Mish Roujou’, Thahab” (“The Act Of Departing, Not Returning, Departing”).

Daqa’iq Tudaiq is a masterful, mesmerizing artistic statement and confirms Jerusalem In My Heart as one of the most engaged and forward-looking avant-Arabic projects at work in contemporary music today. Thanks for listening. https://www.jerusaleminmyheart.com/

Ben Shemie
Always exploratory and meticulous, Shemie’s solo pursuits involve performance based experimental sound practices that integrate freeform excursions and more structured compositional music — veering into classical, radio art, new technologies and all manner of other avant-garde investigation.

Best known as singer and guitarist for art-rock-tronica act Suuns, Shemie also boasts a background in modern classical composition and experimental performance. A fascination for electronic music, specifically the seminal releases of Warp Records spurred him to experiment, expand his sound and fuse it with the conventions of many genres. Ever inquisitive, he seeks out novel conceptual projects and challenging delivery systems for his restless musical soul.

Briscos Blues Revue
https://www.facebook.com/BriscosBluesRevue/

Formed in 2012 in Hamilton Ontario, Briscos Blues Revue was the idea of Greg Brisco and Doug Smith which was, to form a super group of musical friends, and play the music we love, the Blues. With each of us having such a wide span of influences, we decided it would be fun to tackle the lesser played music which initially inspired us as eager young musicians.
Our city Hamilton, was once the blues music factory of Canada. We gave the world the likes of King Biscuit Boy, Rita Chiarelli, Jackie Washington, to name a few. Blues thrives deep in an industrial city. Music trends will always change and go far beyond the blues, but blues draws a loyal audience as it becomes harder to find in the chaos of electronic experimental dance music today. As a band now, with a soft spot for the blues, BBR didn’t waste any time getting back to the basics. Naturally we turned to some of the greatest songs from our records, decided to play them well, and give blues back to our city.
With Greg Brisco on keys and vocals, and Doug Smith on guitar and vocals, Adam Fielding on drums, Joe Pinto on harp, and Johnny “Red” MacDonald on bass, BBR was launched at This Ain’t Hollywood. With their great support, the band played monthly shows and were able to find our sound. Each member offered song suggestions and we eagerly accepted the challenge to learn each other’s new music. We found people really enjoyed hearing songs other than the standard blues covers, and it encouraged us to dig deeper into our archives to find the best grooves and arrangements.
Enjoying some local success sharing our particular flavour of the blues, we attracted guest musicians who wanted sit in for a song at our shows. We’ve had many guests over the years including Kelly Jay of Crowbar, and actor Vinnie Pastore of The Sopranos fame (who is a great frontman/blues singer by the way).
In 2017, BBR was blessed to have Ty Price, a fine musician join us on bass. With his many years of experience performing, and with his knowledge of music as a vinyl collector, Ty was a perfect fit for BBR. The sound of the band changed, which allowed us to present an even wider range of blues styles and the influential music from our collections.
Today, Briscos Blues Revue is proud to be playing great blues music in our city and making new fans of this music. One time a “millenial” came up to me and asked me what kind of music this was, saying – he loved it. We were never more proud.

Spider Costello & The Pretty Faces

After the passing of Stone Blue, I decided to put together a new band, something I’ve had the idea for on the back burner for some time. The new band will pay tribute to the Best of the British Blues/Blues Rock/Rock & Roll of the 60s and 70s, and feature such artists as The Animals, Jeff Beck, Blind Faith, Cream, Deep Purple, Faces, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Pretty Things, The Yardbirds, and, of course, The Rolling Stones.

WAX MANNEQUIN

Wax Mannequin (Christopher Adeney) has honed his weird, folk-punk anthems over years of travel and tribulation. His songs are dark and thoughtful at times, pounding and ridiculous at others…or all of these things at once. Songsmith, performance-art provocateur and self-sabotologist, Wax Mannequin continues indefinitely to carve a deep, indelible groove across the face the modern music underground. He prepares to release his 7th full-length record — Have A New Name — a captivating collection of surreal folk and experimental pop songs.

KIM BARLOW

World travelling, multi-award nominated Kim Barlow is relaunching her musical life in Nova Scotia after many years in the Yukon and a recent parenting hiatus. Creative and intelligent writer of songs, skillful on guitar and clawhammer banjo, Barlow has recorded six albums of her own work and many collaborations. Her newest recording features some of the East Coast’s best: Mark Adam on drums, Nicholas D’Amato on bass, special guests including Old Man Luedecke, and strong new songs about domestic minutiae, the larger picture, and a wild slant on some traditional Maritime tunes.

Hamilton Exclusive Release of Deeps’ Debut Album – In the Aftermath of Last Night – $15 at the Door March 23 2019 @ This Aint Hollywood.

Opening the night will be Hamilton’s Fry Truck and spinning songs all night is DJ Aerlie Wild.

Deeps : www.deeps.ca

The album pays tribute to his Americana roots, with a heavy addition of bar-room pop rock. Like Springsteen, a strong hometown narrative runs through Deeps’ writing. Songs about rusting in Steeltown, rock n’ rolling to pay the bills and small city romance, delivered with attitude-filled vocals, and punctuated by southern gospel guitar, searing organ and upbeat drums.

Fry Truck : https://www.frytruckmusic.com/

Alt-Country, Americana, Canadiana, Hard Folk… Whatever you call it, it’s just great music. Fry Truck has been turning heads in the Hamilton music scene since their first show at This Ain’t Hollywood in 2012. Since then they have become known as one of Hamilton’s “super-groups”, bringing together the stellar songwriting of Dave Pomfret, Dan Medakovic and Chris Altmann, with the superb musicianship of Carrie Ashworth (bass), Robin Pirson (drums) and Matt Coleman (fiddle). Fry Truck has performed three times at Hamilton’s Supercrawl Festival, and are now planning to record their debut CD.

FRIDAY MARCH 1- SUPER BIRTHDAY (from Detroit) with LORRAINE LECKIE & TONY BURGESS READS – 9pm

Image may contain: text

Troy Gregory has been the hardest working musician in Detroit for decades and might even be a legend. From the garage rock scene that spawned Alice Cooper, Iggy and The Stooges, the MC5, White Stripes, the Von Bondies, the Electric Six etc, any similarity ends with the guitars and geography. Troy is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, filmmaker. His work spans a variety of genres and he has performed with dozens of artists including Crime & the City Solution, Prong, Killing Joke, Kim Fowley, Andre Williams, Flotsam and Jetsam, Spiritualized and The Dirtbombs. His own atmospheric recordings and compositions don’t go unnoticed.
Troy is the lead vocalist and bassist for his newest project, SUPER BIRTHDAY, “a ruckus of an electric chamber quartet…with a passion for progressive rock”. Super Birthday cites Roxy Music, Genesis, King Crimson and Rush as influences, along with overtones of punk, jazz, seventies glam, sixties garage, film scores, and noise.

Tony Burgess is a Canadian novelist and screenwriter. He lives in Stayner, Ontario, with his wife Rachel and their two children. His unique style of writing has been called literary horror fiction and described as ”blended ultra-violent horror and absurdist humour, inflicting nightmarish narratives on the quirky citizens of small-town Ontario: think H. P. Lovecraft meets Stephen Leacock.” He is the author of The Hellmouths of Bewdley, Pontypool Changes Everything, Caesarea, Fiction for Lovers and Idaho Winter . Pontypool was made into a film by Bruce McDonald; another of Tony’s books, Dreamland, is currently in production directed again by McDonald and starring Stephen McHattie, Juliette Lewis and Henry Rollins. As well, Tony put out tons of songs via his former band, Left By Snakes, and with its new incarnation, Lucy Jinx.
At this event, Tony will read in his own perverse style.

Lorraine Leckie spent her childhood riding horses in northern Ontario and had a short-lived marriage to a Toronto punk rocker. She spent a decade in Europe as a makeup artist in the fashion industry, working with celebrity clients that included Paul McCartney and Heidi Klum. Once settled in New York settling in New York, Leckie decided to pick up a guitar. After trolling the open mic scene with kids half her age, she put together her ferociously psychedelic rock band the Demons, who play regularly at venues including Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall, the Mercury Lounge and Rockwood Music Hall.

ANOTHER CRUSH headlines This Ain’t Hollywood with Dirty Rick and Hello Hopeless (Kitchener) on Thursday February 21!

This is going to be a night of catchy, vibey, MASSIVE rock music with three of the best up and coming indie bands in Ontario!

SET TIMES

It’s a weeknight so we want you to get your rock’n’roll fix and be home in bed before you turn into a pumpkin:

8PM Doors
830PM music starts
830-11PM your mind will be blown
11PM show ends and you go back to your regular life with renewed energy and hope

Hello Hopeless will open the night! They are a blistering three-piece post/pop punk band from Kitchener with intense guitar and bass, incredibly fast, poppin’ drums, soul shredding two part vocals and a slick stage show that’ll make you beg for one more song! Check them out here: https://hellohopeless.bandcamp.com

Dirty Rick is up next with their signature blues tinged rock n roll! This band has Hamilton roots and Toronto connections and packs the house at legendary venues like The Horseshoe Tavern! They are developing a rabid following in the steel city because their shows are SO FUN and their music is so catchy! So come see what all the fuss is about and find yourself singing OH NO – YEAH! Their EP Post-Candid is available on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/75Vx8ru0aCCsTVip34WBY8

ANOTHER CRUSH headlines the night! This female-fronted Hamilton-based alt rock band has been burning up the scene since they formed last year! They already headlined a packed indie night at The Horseshoe Tavern and recorded a track live before a sold-out audience at the Exeter Sound Studios Xmas Party at Revolution Recording in Toronto! They make massive alternative rock with vibey melodies, soaring guitars, driving drums and gorgeous vocals. Described as something between The Cranberries, Mazzy Star, Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins, they will break your heart and build you back up again. You don’t want to miss their intense performance! They’re currently recording an EP with Thomas McKay of Exeter Sound Studios (Joydrop) but you can check out their live performance of Here You Are on FB: https://www.facebook.com/anothercrushband/videos/another-crush-here-you-are/203171570562857/

Update:
MUSIC STARTS AT 9:30PM

// Brandy Zdan //

http://www.brandyzdan.com

Zdan stretches her legs with her solo career, exploring the middle ground between the Beatles, the Breeders and the Bangles on this hook-heavy garage-rocker. Come for the guitar work, stay for the reverb-drenched harmonies, which connect the dots between the poppy and the psychedelic Americana.”
– Rolling Stone

“Secretear’s riff-laden burners and mindful pop ballads shine with emotional resolve and permanence.”- RELIX

“Zdan is rock music’s best weapon for survival. She’s a devilish noise-maker, and no one could possibly catch up to her. And that’s OK. She’s in a masterclass of her very own. – Popdust

“One woman tour de force” – Lone Star Magazine.

“Fetching pop/rock melodies” – SPIN

// The Redhill Valleys//

http://www.theredhillvalleys.com

The Redhill Valleys are a four piece Alt-Country and Roots Rock band from Hamilton, Ontario. The band consists of Guitarists Tim Allard, Danielle Beaudin, bassist Chelsea McWilliams and Drummer Matt Soliveri. Last summer, they were named runners-up at the 2017 Boots and Hearts Emerging Artists Showcase and have since gained a lot of traction and fans in the Canadian Country music scene. Their influences come from iconic artists such as Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, Tom Petty and The Band, while forging a musical path all their own. Their unapologetic stage presence and grit-infused harmonies are putting The Redhill Valleys on the Canadian Music map as a band you don’t want to miss.

LUCRECIA DALT (Berlin via Columbia, Rvng Intl.)
https://lucreciadalt.bandcamp.com/
Musician & sound artist Lucrecia Dalt has been making riveting sonic explorations for years now, and her latest LP, 2018’s Anticlines has garnered widespread international acclaim, a record that suggests “this is what antiforms sound like, and this is what the universe’s indifference sounds like.” Dalt’s ongoing experiments with visual artist Regina de Miguel support these ideas, their practice allowing the objects of their attention to slip in and out of being. Her slippery spoken word and performative nature is recalling the work of Laurie Anderson, Robert Ashley, Asmus Tietchens, or Lena Platonos. In preparing a live set for Anticlines, Dalt plans to stage an uninterrupted configuration, like a kind of alienated lecture, aiming for “gestures that create tensions with non-existent objects.” Dalt intends “to provide meaning and a place for the listener to meditate or relate to the concerns and ideas” she presents
JOHN WIESE (Los Angeles, Pan/Gilgongo/etc records)
https://johnwiese.bandcamp.com/
A prolific force of psychedelia out of the american underground, Wiese has been pumping out uncompromising sound explorations for over 2 decades, in a multitude of ensembles, solo and in his duo Sissy Spacek. The current iteration of his live set, featuring a reel to reel tape machine, is said to be his finest yet.
THOUGHTS ON AIR (Hamilton, Cloud Valley)
https://thoughtsonair.bandcamp.com/
Hamilton’s long time purveyor of twisted soulscapes, Thoughts on Air has been cranking out incredibly affecting music across many calendar years. TOA is the perfect Hamiltonian component on this beautiful bill of prolific creators.

NOT OF
Ian Blurton’s FUTURE NOW
MOUNT CYANIDE

The mighty duo NOT OF returns to the Hammer with a pair of all-star supergroups each making their Steeltown debuts.

First up? The legendary Ian Blurton (Change of Heart, Public Animal, C’Mon, Blurtonia, et al) has a new combo: FUTURE NOW. Its goal? Open worship of all things riffy and tritone-ish. Its weapons? Only three of the most seasoned, potent players around in Aaron Goldstein, Anna Ruddick, and Glenn Milchem. Shut up. This is gonna be nuts.

And (double-)kicking the night off? MOUNT CYANIDE is the brand new black metal project forged from the ashes of the stalwart power trio, The Illuminati, including the current bassist/vocalist in Biblical, Nick Sewell.

Honestly? My brain is exploding just writing this out. Our release party in August was super special…but we think this can be even better. Can’t wait, Hamilton!
