THURSDAY JULY 18 A SPECIAL NIGHT OF SIGGIMUSIC

From Italy to Toronto, to the Canadian music scene, Daniel Sigismondi, (Siggi) is bringing his music to Hamilton, and where better to meet the people of Hamilton, than at This Ain’t Hollywood.
Supported by local favourite the Mike Williams Band and a new and exciting young Hamilton trio, Lancaster Music, prepare for a feast for your senses.

Doors open at 8:00 pm, show from 9-midnight. $10:00 cover

The Italian musician made the journey to Toronto in 2014 to find his place in the Canadian music scene.
Music always came as a feeling to Daniel as he started appreciating its beauty and understanding the creation process at a really young age.
Influenced by hip hop, R&B, soul and found inspiration in classics like Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix and Sly and the Family Stone, his sound was nowhere to be found in the Italian music scene.
In Canada, his goal is to make people dance, to give the right positive message, to connect… in his own way.
He’s a musician and playing music is what he loves most. “I find the guitar such a sexy instrument, and I want to bring back that sound that seems to have disappeared in today’s music scene”

==================================
Based in Toronto, SNAGGLE, under the leadership of in-demand 25 year old jazz pianist Nick Maclean, is a 6-piece electric-jazz-funk ensemble often described by media as “Canada’s answer to Snarky Puppy”. Sporting an all-original repertoire the group has a fearless and muscular yet introspective sound likened to a cross between electric-era Miles Davis and Rage Against the Machine. Taking elements from a wide variety of musical sources including jazz, funk, rock, and metal, SNAGGLE contextualizes them within the improvisational and spontaneous elements of the jazz ideology. Their uniquely brash and infectious brand of jazz-funk is a melodically driven sound which incorporates primal groove qualities more commonly associated with pop and rock, swinging their live show from quietly contemplative all the way to explosively fierce, sometimes all within the same tune. The line-up of players in SNAGGLE includes some of the hottest twenty-somethings on the Toronto scene, representing the next generation of irreverent, boundary pushing Canadian players standing side-by-side internationally acclaimed veteran trumpet iconoclast Brownman Ali. SNAGGLE has been in high demand in the Canadian jazz festival circuit, and has been performing regularly in and around the Toronto area since 2013. Most recently the band was honoured to be the recipient of three Gold-standard Global Music Awards, a Toronto Independent Music Award and a nomination for an International Independent Music Award for their recent album “THE LONG SLOG”. Both “THE LONG SLOG” and their recent Christmas single “CHRISTMAS TUNE” have been seeing much international critical acclaim since their release (both releases on Browntasauras Records).

========================================
Trinidadian-born, NYC-schooled & heralded as “Canada’s preeminent Jazz trumpeter” by NYC’s Village Voice, multi-award winning trumpet player Brownman Ali stands at the forefront of innovation in the Canadian jazz community. A protégé to his teacher, Grammy-winning trumpet legend, Randy Brecker, he tirelessly leads 7 unique ensembles of his own including the internationally acclaimed, Miles Davis influenced, BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO. In 2009 he launched his own record label: Browntasauras Records, which saw the Electryc Trio’s two now celebrated recordings garner substantial accolades and press. The label is now a home to all his ensembles as well as a growing number of award-winning and boundary pushing artists. Now, using the label as a breeding ground for new and visionary talent in the modern jazz realm, Browntasauras and Brownman himself are widely regarded as vanguards for the evolution of Jazz in Canada.

About FLAT 5

========================================
“Flat 5 is a funkified collective hailing from Hamiton, Ontario. Featuring one of the tightest rhythm sections in Ontario; Flat 5 delivers a high energy, brass fueled funk with an injection of gritty southern blues. The band draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources both old and new; such as Fred Wesley, JJ Cale, Average White Band, and the Allman Brothers.

In the past year Flat 5 has had the pleasure of playing some of Ontario’s largest music festivals and sharing the stage with North America’s premier funk and hip hop artists, including Brownman Ali, C.L. Smooth, Michael St. George,Robin Benedict, Hachey The Mouthpeace, After Funk, Conor Gains, Jerome Godboo, Metric Man, Diesel Dog, and many more. 2017 looks to be an exciting year for the group, as they record their debut album and bring the funk to a town near you!”

The Faisal Husseini Youth Forum for Culture and Folklore

The Faisal Husseini Youth Forum for Culture and Folklore is a community centre located in the city of Deir Abu Meshal, in the West Bank of Palestine. The centre operates out of a group of restored and renovated ancient stone houses.

The project was created in the spirit of Faisal Husseini, a prominent voice and activist in the fight for Palestinian liberation from Israeli occupation throughout the second half of the 20th century.

The primary purpose of the centre is to serve as an educational hub where local youth can develop a deeper understanding of Palestinian culture, history, and politics that contributes to a strong sense of community, and resistance against the occupation. The centre offers a space for folks to form networks of political support and solidarity at a local, national and international level,

The centre includes a garden, library, art space, and common work space. It serves as a host for school programming, workshops and social activities, including programming specifically for woman and children.

Like any community centre, a high level of resources is required to establish and maintain the initiative. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the continued development of the Faisal Husseini Youth Forum for Culture and Folklore.

SUNDAY JUNE 23 ORANGEMILK SHOWCASE: CVN • KOEOSAEME • MAN MADE HILL

Image may contain: 1 person, text

Strangewaves & Orange Milk Records present an evening of thrilling Orange Milk Records artists at This Ain’t Hollywood, with:

CVN
Koeosaeme
Man Made Hill

$10
*NOTAFLOF*

CVN (Japan)
https://soundcloud.com/cvntrack
Japan’s Nobuyuki Sakuma is a prolific artist; formerly of the Jesse Ruins duo on the Captured Tracks label, he now shifts time between his electronic music project CVN, curating the mix series Grey Matter Archives, and chief editor duties at Avyss Magazine. “I.C.” will be his second album for Orange Milk as CVN, and it is an eclectic hybrid of beat music and abstract electronics. There is a searching quality in his music, with leaps in variation from track to track that are meant to elicit the mutating feelings of walking through Tokyo.

KOEOSAEME (Japan)

https://soundcloud.com/ryu-yoshizawa-1

Koeosaeme is Japanese artist Ryu Yoshizawa, and OBANIKESHI, his second album for Orange Milk, is a master class in how to engineer a compelling sound-design record front to back. Utilizing a variety of recorded instruments and hi-fidelity electronics, OBANIKESHI can be linked to multiple musical lineages; the screeching strings, whispered vocals, and moments of atonality recall famous works of 20th century composers like György Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki, while sections of manic synthetic noise bring to mind tape-collage composer Noah Creshevsky and more recent Japanese underground artists Foodman, toiret status, Seiho, and others.

Man Made Hill (Hamilton)

https://manmadehill.bandcamp.com/releases

Canada’s Prince of Creativity, Man Made Hill, returns to the This Ain’t Hollywood stage to once again leave it all on the line for the audience. Hot on the heels of another masterpiece release, “Relaxed Fit”, you know MMH will have plenty of fresh tricks and treasures up his kaleidoscopic sleeve.

Lacey Hill
Have you heard Lacey? Watch as she takes the stage. Isn’t she gorgeous? She sits on her stool, or chair, or on the edge of the stage, and her long hair slides down her shoulder. The guitar settles comfortable in her hold as she plucks a few strings and tunes it to her liking. Then she strums. Her music is set on fire by her distinct voice. You keep watching her. The vocals are delicate, yet powerful. She makes her guitar sing too. One song is happy. Another is sad. Her third is jealous and spiteful. Now you’re watching and listening. Each one, you find, is stuffed with honesty. Each one, you find, rings with the energy Lacey used to create something wonderful from pain. Each one, you find, fills you with something you dismiss as deja vu. The melodies wash over you, her lyrics, carried by her voice, weave something unspeakable in and outside of her guitar playing. She’s something. You keep listening and you’re ecstatic and touched and haunted all at once.

Friday May 24th – LINDY (record release party) with SIGRUN STELLA and THE PEACEFULLS – 9pm

with Sigrun Stella
and The Peacefulls

Icelandic-Canadian songwriter Lindy Vopnfjörd has announced his seventh full-length album, You Will Know When It’s Right, for a March 29 release, led by the single “Love Me Like That”, which dropped this past Friday – listen + share.

You Will Know When It’s Right came into fruition after an invitation from legendary Icelandic songwriter Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson, leader of acclaimed electronic band Gus Gus, to team up and collaborate with Iceland’s most beloved band, Nydonsk. The album was recorded at the famed Hljodriti Studio, and includes a live performance with Nydonsk at their concert at Eldborg Harpa in Reykjavik.

Vopnfjörd is a proficient storyteller who distills human experience into the vital emotions that define a moment so crisply, and memorably. From his West Coast, Victoria-based band Northern Junk to Toronto’s explosive indie rock group, Major Maker, that boasted a fervor comparable to The Killers or Hard-Fi, Lindy’s talents have spanned many musical outfits. From his earliest albums, The Humourous Years and Suspension of Disbeliefwhich he toured extensively through the UK, to his most recent, Young Waverer, Lindy has consistently delivered a caliber of songwriting and musical arrangement, that has garnered heaps of critical accolades.

Born into the Icelandic community in Manitoba, Canada, Vopnfjörd started his music career early, singing traditional Icelandic songs with his family, helping shape this intuitive artist. By age four, Lindy was already pronouncing his “stand and care for the world” bent as an Icelandic-Canadian folk artist by singing cautionary songs against nuclear war. Traveling around by bus with his mom and dad and extended family, he developed an appreciation for performing as a form of sharing. Touring comes naturally to Lindy, and to see him live is to witness years of experience in honest delivery and authentic exchange with a dedication as real to a room of three, as when he’s performing to a stadium-full.

Over the course of now seven albums, Lindy have mesmerized, delighted and moved audiences at house parties and bars to embassies, theatre halls, touring with Whitehorse, and playing large festivals, such as Osheaga, the Reykjavik Folk Festival, and Hillside Festival.

Residing now in Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood, Vopnfjörd and his ongoing artistry are supported by an artistic family and solid fan base, and reflects the musical pedigree of the artistic community in which he is immersed.

He has been seen outside venues at 3am in Germany playing an acoustic guitar and singing to people that didn’t want the show to end. He has written poems to fans from behind bars whilst locked up on bogus marijuana charges. He has suffered a spiral fracture of the humerus while arm wrestling a marine in Hawaii. He has recorded with and toured alongside some of independent rap music’s most influential figures, including Sage Francis, Busdriver and Astronautalis. He has been in bands described as hardcore, crunk rap, lo-fi synth pop, Latin progressive and psych-jazz-rap. He has crafted abstracted and personal narratives mining the depths of depression and heights of hope. He has slept on countless floors when hotels weren’t in the touring budget and lost girlfriends and jobs all for the love of creating and performing.

An engaging, theatrical live performer, Ceschi Ramos has treated entire venues like a stage, viewing the middle of the audience or an empty barstool as good a place as any to perform a soul-baring folk song or tongue-twisting rap track. Ceschi once described himself in song as “a martyr at most… a failure at least” and said that, “In the eyes of history I’ll be no more than a leaf on a tree.” He knows what it is to suffer for his art and is aware that music exploring the ugliness and sorrow of the human condition will always exist on the fringes of a game dominated by disposable escapism and expensive publicists. Yet he still pours everything he has into his craft, and on any given night you can find him tracking vocals at his cousin’s New Haven studio, warmly greeting fans and friends at a dive bar merch booth or rapping double-time in Japan or Europe for audiences that often don’t speak his language, but are able to see the giant heart at the core of it all // https://www.facebook.com/ceschiramos/

FACTOR CHANDELIER // starting out as a DJ in 1998, Factor Chandelier has evolved into one of Western Canada’s busiest producers. He is continuously working and touring with high caliber Canadian and American artists including: Awol One, Open Mike Eagle, Moka Only, Myka 9, Ceschi, Sole, Aesop Rock, Buck65, Gregory Pepper, Astronautalis, Sunspot Jonz, Evil Ebenezer, Merkules, Xzibit, Kool Keith, Def 3, Kay the Aquanaut and the Side Road Crew. He is known for continuously dropping top-notch product out of Saskatoon since the late ‘90s. He is the founder, owner and operator of Side Road Records (2001), releasing over 30 professional albums between Side Road & Fake Four inc. Factor’s music has garnered international distribution and he has received positive critical acclaim by way of magazine and website reviews as well as receiving radio play on college/community radio all over Canada, the US and Japan. His collaborative album “Wildlif3” with Def 3 won the WCMA for best hip hop recording in 2015.

Factor Chandelier’s production combines smooth melodic soundscapes and live instruments over immaculate drums put together seemingly effortlessly to create a distinct sound of his own and it’s for this reason he’s consistently banging out one-of-a-kind beats as one of underground music’s favorite new school producers. Factor is always trying to create original, thought-provoking music that pushes the envelope of traditional hip-hop and has drawn significant attention to this Canadian artist. Hailing from the prairies, this Saskatoon, SK born and raised musician continues to make waves with his innovative sound // https://www.facebook.com/factorchandelier/

Kiwi jr
https://kiwijr.bandcamp.com

“The joyous 10 song debut from Kiwi jr. is a lustrous 12 string paint job with reams of full grain, cordovan leathery chorus washing over the intoxicating aroma of glittering prize-fought floor fillers. All of the above have been stamped on the back of a Postcard wrapped around a Boomerang that’s landed softly on Jonathan Richman’s lawn where Nick Lowe is reluctantly but irresistibly tapping his toes to “Wicked Witches.” The pair pick it up and use the blunt edge to open an ice cold bottle of beer from the ironclad ice box holding the provisions to a party you haven’t been invited to yet, but is emanating the faint smell of shellfish and hockey pucks. In the cloud of smoke from the grill are seeming streams of consciousness telling the most absurd and delighting stories of enviable enemies, nights gone wrong, ludicrous desires matching open suspended chords, and criminally convenient opportunities to use “Burt Bacharach” as a rhyme. The sound of a friendly argument with your friends, the sound of an ocean breeze wafting through the front door of Chez Jay in June at midday, what we think about when we think about John Vincent: This record is a laser cold hit.”
