Will Griffith, known musically as The Great Dying, is a Mississippi Delta born, country singer-songwriter residing in Oxford, MS. Although Will doesn’t see his dark country musings as directly blues influenced. “I want people to celebrate sad music because of its beauty. Sad songs help you laugh at your own sadness. They are meant to help you keep going,” says Griffith. Punk rock, however, felt like Will’s blues and was devoid of the phoniness and commercialism that drove tourism in the area surrounding his hometown of Cleveland, MS.

Will’s first release as The Great Dying, Bloody Noses & Roses (2018) was released courtesy of Dial Back Sound, a production company and label located in Water Valley, MS. Netherlands music source Written In Music called it an “Intense and impressive debut.” The album was recorded and produced by Bronson Tew and Matt Patton (Drive By Truckers, Dexateens).
Touring for the record so far has included a smattering of smaller solo appearances in California, and several two to three week runs in the Southeast as a duo of Griffith and guitarist Craig Pratt. Griffith and Pratt plan to tour most of November 2019 playing first dates throughout New York, New England and Ontario.
More recently, The Great Dying recorded a new song “Writing a Song in Blue Ink” in tribute to musician, singer and poet David Berman (of Silver Jews and Purple Mountains ) who passed in August of 2019. This new track has just been released as a single on digital and streaming formats via Dial Back Sound.
All of the proceeds from the digital sales of this single will be donated to Nuçi’s Space, an organization whose mission is to prevent suicide, with a focus on musicians.

Freedom Baby was formed in June of 2017 by Eric and Brianna who started recording songs in their bedroom. They released their first single “Video Daydream” in August 2017 to positive reviews, premiering on Indie88.

For their first EP they enlisted the help of more musicians and expanded their roster from two to eight, switching from the electronic bedroom experimentation to a more straightforward indie rock sound with elements of experimental progressive rock. “How You’ll Grow” was released in March of 2018 to critical acclaim. Single “When We Go” premiered on EARMILK.

In May they released a second EP/Single. The 15 minute indie rock opera entitled “I Want To Give” which saw the band perfecting the blend of experimental indie rock they started on their debut EP.

WHOOP-Szo (You’ve Changed Records)

WHOOP-Szo is a force of nature, sprung from a mixed-blooded experience of Canadian history with deep Anishinaabek roots. Thunderous and ground-breaking, harmonious and generative—a WHOOP-Szo show envelops audiences in an emotional weather-storm that dances conscientiously between anger and discipline, frustration and hope.
They tell us about colonial injustice loudly and punishingly, with haunting chord changes and monolithic distortion. They explore the possibility of wisdom and empowerment, with acoustic melodies that calmly find space within crushing layers of politics and sound.

On stage and off, WHOOP-Szo engage communities with a powerful synchrony that invites people to feel and to heal. They are passionate storytellers who knock loudly on the door, and will reward you tenfold for letting them in.

Forthcoming album Warrior Down harnesses their power into a concise, focused 35 minutes on wax, calling out both specific instances of injustice in Canadian history — such as the murder of bandleader Adam Sturgeon’s cousin by a Saskatchewan RCMP officer, or recalling Sturgeon’s grandfather’s experience at a Residential School (“Cut Your Hair”) — and broader, wider-reaching ones such as the experience of having race and culture assigned to you by a government that doesn’t represent you (“6.1/6.2”).

Zoon (Paper Bag Records)

(FKA Bloom) experimental folk/moccasingaze, Daniel Monkman crafts heavy, abstract galactic songs that reflect his incredibly unique path. With a forthcoming album on Paper Bag Records, Zoon is primed to explode onto the international music scene.

Heaby Medal

The latest project from Hamilton’s multi-instrumentalist and no-shit taker Evelyn Charlotte Joe. Expect fresh anthems that’ll cut to the core.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 9 BRAD’S 40TH BDAY W/ CAROLE POPE, SATE, & MOONLIGHT DESIRES

Image may contain: 3 people, text

Who is B-Rad? It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that CAROLE POPE is coming back to Hamilton on November 9, 2019!

CAROLE POPE broke through the mainstream in the late 70s and early 80s with her band ROUGH TRADE, and alongside co-creator Kevan Staples, they challenged the boundaries of art, music, sexuality, and the societal pressures to conform. After an extensive back surgery kept her away for nearly two years, Carole Pope is back on the scene to deliver the flammable lyrics and signature voice that have earned her fans of all ages across four decades.

It only takes seeing SATE in concert once to feel the impact of everything she represents. Toronto’s NOW Magazine described her as having “a tornado of stage presence,” while Lithium’s live reviewer proclaimed, “I can tell you sincerely that she is one of the most resounding artists I’ve ever heard.” When each show inevitably reaches its climax with the indelible image of SATE, fist in the air, and an entire audience raising its hands in unity, the full spectrum of human emotions—anger, joy, vulnerability—suddenly comes into sharp focus through the music. Provocative, Emotive, and Reflective, SATE is the future face of Rock ‘n’ Roll for the 2020s.

MOONLIGHT DESIRES might only play 80s cover songs, but you’d be wrong to dismiss them as just another cover band. Formed by long-time Hamilton, ON musician Trevor Ziebarth (Actor/Writer/Composer on Teletoon’s adult comedy series Sons of Butcher), Moonlight Desires is his ode to the raunchy romances and youthful misadventures of summers past. By re-working synth laden pop hits of the 1980s, Ziebarth manages to turn familiar guilty pleasures into modern, guitar-driven rock anthems. Their new EP “At The Movies” delivers 6 fresh takes on the themes from your favourite freshman flicks, from Goonies to The Breakfast Club. Prepare for the nostalgia to warm your heart while Moonlight Desires melts your face.

The long version:

As some of you have heard, this year I (Gareth) received the Artist Development grant from FACTOR. This grant is meant to fund projects and initiatives which will help us grow in our artistry, reach, and recognition as a band.

One of the big items on our proposal was the making of some live show videos. These are pretty much essential if you want to book festivals when you’re as fresh on the scene as us.

This is where you come in. *We really, badly, dearly, affectionately, sincerely want you to come out for this.* We really mean that. We want you to turn up, not only because we love you all so much – and we do – but because we want you to be in these videos. Nothing could make these videos more special than having our friends and followers who we love so much immortalized on film supporting us.

So far you’ve been so great at turning up to shows, we’ve been so so encouraged by it – really and truly. With that said, consider this “the big one.”

We can’t wait, and would love to see you there. it would mean the world.

Thanks for reading that – one final word:

I am so excited for CQ to open up the night for us. This band is the real deal. They are incredibly talented, people and artists of integrity, and put on an intimate but energizing show. Check out the video below for an idea.

Thanks so much for your time, my friends. I can’t wait to see you out there.

Love to you all.

Come on out for a night of powerhouse original music featuring Matty Simpson (Hamilton, ON), Organic Culture (Bracebridge, ON) and Paris Pick (Whitehorse, YT)

/Matty Simpson /
Matty Simpson is a world class guitar player and singer-songwriter based out of Hamilton, Ontario. His style has been called an eclectic mix of rock and roll and the blues. Aside from his own solo project as a singer songwriter, Matty also accompanies various other artists around the Hamilton area.

/Paris Pick/
Paris Pick has been building her musical empire in Whitehorse, Yukon since 2013, carving a musical niche for herself with her distinctive voice and modern Motown style. Pick leads her band with powerhouse vocals and guitar while her band The Pricks add flavor to Paris’ original music with tasteful back-up vocals, disciplined electric guitar parts, and hot grooves provided by a super funky rhythm section.

/Organic Culture/
This trio of amigos formed in Bracebridge, Ontario in 2018. After inhabiting the same small Muskokan town a mere 19 years they combined their musical talents to formulate a mixture of complex upbeat drumming, quirky lyrics, and groovy basslines. Despite not wanting to be construed as “too hipster” they funk out with electrically twangy original tunes that always get pub patrons pouncing (bouncing?) around. Don’t miss their earthly sound that’s sure to keep you up in the clouds.

Don’t miss their earthly sound that’s sure to keep you up in the clouds.

MARKER STARLING(Toronto)
https://markerstarling.bandcamp.com/
Toronto troubadour Chris A. Cummings (Marker Starling, formerly Mantler) has been playing Melancholy Party Jams since 1999. A solo performer for many years, his preferred weapons were a Wurltizer electric piano and an early pre-programmed drum machine. More recently he has been supported by a band consisting of Jay Anderson (drums) and Matt McLaren (bass).
After a long association with Germany’s Tomlab label, who released the second, third and fourth Mantler records (SADISFACTION, LANDAU and MONODY) Cummings began working with UK-based Tin Angel Records in 2010. With Tin Angel, Marker Starling has released 3 albums since 2015 – the acclaimed ROSY MAZE (praised by Matthew Horton in the NME for its “timeless quality”), solo all-covers record I’M WILLING (2016), and the self-retrospective ANCHORS AND AMPERSANDS (2017). An all-originals solo record is planned for release in late 2018. The recent 3 records were also released by Japan’s 7e.p. Records, who brought Cummings to Japan for performances in 2016 and 2018.
Cummings has collaborated with the German band Von Spar, contributing vocals and lyrics to four songs on their album STREET LIFE (Italic, 2014). His song “Deep Background” was recorded by Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier for her Source Ensemble record FIND ME FINDING YOU (Drag City, 2017). His 2010 song “In Stride” was included in DJ Koze’s DJ-Kicks compilation on !K7 Records in 2015.

DAN EDMONDS
From the grooving opening track “To Be That Needle,” to the charmingly lo-fi “Yearning,” Edmonds presents himself as a folkie with a tough, inner-city edge. It’s a stylistic shift he had been mulling over before Harlan Pepper’s dissolution, and as tracks began taking shape in his home studio, Edmonds soon realized he had no choice but to go all the way.
“My idea was mainly to just hit record and see what came out,” he says. “A lot of the songs were created that way, but the entire album evolved over a long period of time. I used an 8-track machine, so I was really limited in that sense, but I loved the challenge. It was almost like trying to make the perfect demo. To me, demos always sound better than the final product in most cases.”
Edmonds’ notion of not over-thinking the process extended to his lyrics as well, some of which spilled out in stream-of-consciousness fashion. Nevertheless, the imagery imbued in tracks such as “Love Can Be A Tunnel” and “Dead Couches” greatly adds to the overall dreaminess of Ladies On The Corner. Some will surely hear echoes of Kurt Vile, yet Edmonds’ well-established voice has in many ways never sounded more original, as if his intention is to deconstruct what it means to be a singer/songwriter in the first place.
After laying down the basic tracks on his own, Edmonds shifted the scene to fellow Hamiltonian Sean Pearson’s Boxcar Sound Recording where additional guitars were added by Wayne Petti (Grey Lands, Cuff The Duke), bass by Tyler Belluz, and lap steel by Rich Burnett (Bry Webb). Edmonds likens the sessions to a gathering of friends more than anything else, in keeping with the loose vibes of the music.
In some respects, Ladies On The Corner is also a break from the Americana tag that was often attached to Harlan Pepper, largely due to their love of all things twang. “Americana has become a pretty broad term, even though I never totally felt like it applied to us,” Edmonds says. “But I feel like these new songs show off a different side of all the old country and folk music I still love. My hope is that people will come to this album with fresh ears and appreciate it for what it is.”
At the very least, folk purists can latch onto Edmonds’ haunting rendition of Lead Belly’s “Goodnight Irene,” which closes the album, an idea he says was inspired by Ry Cooder and his habit of often ending his records with radically re-imagined versions of traditional songs. It’s the perfect send-off, and it’s not much of a stretch to believe it will also become the standard closer to Edmonds’ live shows, at least for the time being.
Edmonds will be doing those shows with a new band consisting of drummer Jason Bhattacharya (also of Taylor Knox’s band), bassist Brad Germain, pedal steel guitarist Ben Robinson, and Harlan Pepper lead guitarist Jimmy Hayes. Edmonds admits he’s been listening to the Grateful Dead a lot recently, so the band’s modus operandi at this point is to fully explore all angles of the material as much as possible.
Whether you call it Cosmic Canadiana or any other currently hip term, the bottom line is that Ladies On The Corner heralds a new beginning for one of this country’s unique young voices. Firmly rooted in the past, but with a vision squarely aimed toward the future, Dan Edmonds is ready for his close-up.

…veers from scrappy prog oddness to absurdist metal to distressed folk, all with a dark humour that embraces the ridiculous and borders on outright Dadaism. Beneath the unsettling imagery and musical turns there is a steady current of inquisition — a constant questioning of life’s strangeness and his own neurodivergent experience. He has appeared on thousands of pub, gallery and festival stages in Canada, Australia and Europe since 2001 and continues to carve an ever-deepening groove across the modern music underground.

Their intricate arrangements combine organic sounds with electronics to create memorable songs that range from hypnotic lullabies to nightmarish psychedelia. “An ever-changing creation of sound that wavers between the pit of your worst fears and the euphoria of love at its peak. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22 SUNGLACIERS (Calgary) with PACER(Toronto) and CAPITOL

No photo description available.

SUNGLACIERS (Calgary AB) // Sunglaciers are embarking on their first cross Canada tour to support the release of their debut LP, Foreign Bodies. Following the success of their first two EPs (Twin Evil Twin in 2018 and Moving in Darkness the year prior), songwriters Evan Resnik and Mathieu Blanchard retreated to Mexico City in late 2017 to write together and lay the groundwork for the album. A dense, expansive work of alternating urgency and atmosphere, the album mirrors the particular nature of its birthplace through its inventive structures, harsh beauty, and the ability to find serenity inside discord. //

PACER (TO) // Since moving to Toronto from Sudbury, Shawn Kosmo has made his mark with videos for Twist, Casper Skulls and Sam Coffey. He’s also the frontman of hyperactive rock trio Pacer, proudly shouting lyrics that touch on topics like queerness and mental health. Kosmo’s video for their latest single, Rapture, perfectly captures the band’s frenetic riffitude in a rapid-fire, toilet-and-all montage. “This song makes me wanna freak out,” he explains. “I tried my best to make the video feel the same.” – NOW Toronto

CAPITOL (Hamilton) // Capitol is a five-piece indie project from Hamilton, Ontario. Debut album “Dream Noise” due out in October 2019, via Meritorio Records & Kingfisher Bluez Records.
Previously “UK Cinema”, upcoming album “Dream Noise” was recorded in the summer of 2018 at Candle Recording in Toronto, produced by Josh Korody (“The Dirty Nil”, “Tallies”, “Weaves”) and mastered by Sarah Register in NYC (“Future Islands”, “Depeche Mode”, “Lower Dens”).
Capitol are influenced by an array of an genres from 70s punk to modern indie rock, and “Dream Noise” captures the decades in 11 eclectic tracks.
