Ancient Shapes return back to This Ain’t Hollywood!
get tix here https://www.bruha.com/event/5256

“A Flower That Wouldn’t Bloom” is the third offering from the flower pop super group “Ancient Shapes”. In all realities it is the amalgamation of two recording sessions that took place almost a year apart–– in essence this is the greatest hits compilation.

Ancient Shapes is comprised of Daniel Romano, David Nardi, Vee Bell, Roddy Rosetti and Ian Romano. They have been called “ the best band since computers” and also “incredibly good as hell” when it comes to their live engagements and sock hop shake down events. The group has traveled the world over sharing their songs and ideas with others, now they offer us this: A flower that just refuses to bloom.

Inside this heated material you will find such subjects as –– sadness, happiness, loneliness, togetherness, longing, acceptance, colonial guilt complexes and home town optimism.
There was the first one, and everyone seemed to like that, and the second one people liked too… this is the third one. Odds are good.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 27th – Strangewaves Presents – PELADA (from Montreal) with CHRISTINE SEALEY – 9pm

Image may contain: text

Strangewaves & This Ain’t Hollywood present a massive electronic double bill that’ll be the highlight of your holidays:

PELADA (Montreal, PAN records)
CHRISTINA SEALEY (Hamilton, Orphx)
PHÉDRE (Toronto)
DJ HOUSE ALMA (Allie Blumas of DOOMSQUAD)

$10 advance, $15 door

PELADA

Montréal electronic duo, Pelada, have resonated with audiences for their recontextualized blend of Chicago house, Detroit techno with more abstract & abrasive club music. Chris Vargas’ lyrics, delivered in Spanish, explore themes of power, surveillance, social, environmental and gender politics.

The duo, comprised of vocalist Chris Vargas and producer Tobias Rochman, create a sound combining a patchwork of sequenced analogue synths, drum machines, samplers and voice that is both urgent and powerful. The resulting live sets are living and breathing entities, energetic and combative.

Pelada grew out of the city’s infamous underground afterhours warehouse scene, performing alongside DJs, punk groups, and live experimental electronic acts. These large parties are often illegal, populated by an eclectic mix of punks, club kids, ravers and freaks, promoting a spirit of inclusiveness and open-mindedness. Pelada embraces this diverse crowd united by a shared interest of letting loose, unsatisfied by what is being offered in the more mainstream clubs.

CHRISTINA SEALEY

Since the mid-1990s, Christina has been working with Richard Oddie to create a unique fusion of techno, industrial, and electro-acoustic music. Using modular and analog synthesizers, software, feedback circuits, location recordings and homemade instruments, Oddie and Sealey draw upon the darker tendencies of techno, electro, dub, and combine these elements with the experimental aesthetics of early industrial music. Orphx has gained an international following as one of the pioneering acts within the European “rhythmic noise” scene. They have performed in numerous countries around the world, appearing alongside artists such as Alva Noto, Laurie Anderson, Marcel Dettmann, Monolake, Pan Sonic and many others. Oddie and Sealey have also collaborated on audio/visual projects and exhibitions related to their musical work. Orphx have released ten full-length albums and numerous singles on vinyl, cd and cassette. Their most recent work further develops a dark hybrid of techno, dub and industrial that has garnered critical acclaim from many of techno’s leading DJs.

PHÈDRE

PHÈDRE is an electronic duo from Tkaronto/Toronto, Canada. Originating in experimental-pop realms, their richly-textured compositions have grown into instrumental sets of high-bpm rhythmic soundscapes, performed live using sequencers and synthesizers. The ever-changing bass-heavy sets pay tribute to club, breakbeat, jungle and techno, while maintaining Phèdre’s own unique sense of musical beat exploration. Phèdre has toured in Can/USA, Mexico, EU/UK, Japan/Korea/Taiwan, Philippines, Russia, and Lebanon.

miles from nowhere. EP Release show.

Celebrating the release of the self-titled debut EP by miles from nowhere. Available everywhere on December 3rd.

Based in Hamilton, ON, Canada, ‘miles from nowhere.’ is the solo project of musician Miles Evans-Branagh. Being heavily influenced by his guitarist father, Miles has grown up a multi-instrumentalist, with piano being his main instrument since the age of five. Miles has been writing and recording groove-based Indie-Soul music for the past few years at Hamilton studio ‘Fort Rose’ with Jason Bhattacharya (Granny Smith) & Aaron Hutchinson (Haolin Munk).
With his debut EP set to be released on December 3rd, and his first single ‘Brotherhood’ out now, Miles is excited to share his music with the world.

ALSO ON THE BILL:

Granny Smith is Jason Bhattacharya. Working the past decade alongside artists such as Bart, Dan Edmonds, Ejji Smith, Blunt Chunks, Taylor Knox, Ferrari Garden, J.R & Miles from Nowhere, Bhattacharya is now working on his own project. Jason Bhattacharya is Granny Smith.

Merival is Torontonian singer-songwriter Anna Horvath, drawing inspiration from tension and gathering from the romantic and familial with practiced vulnerability. She gained recognition in 2016 with the critically acclaimed EP Lovers, and released her debut full-length record, Lesson, in June 2019, followed by her first UK tour in September 2019. Her songs carry questions, exploration, and an expectation of philosophical growth. Full of folk lyricism, experimental instrumentation, and a sweeping dynamic range, she strives to make sense of the key arresting moments of life.
